GPU – Buyer’s Guide

Posted on September 23rd, 2019

Gaming Industry now being the fastest growing industry of the 21st Century, most people from around the world choose to spend their spare time gaming with other players.

Most of us can now afford to build ourselves a Gaming PC but how to do it? You choose the type of processor you want, the right amount of storage and sufficient RAM.

Now comes one of the hardest choices that you must make. Which Graphics Card to select for your Gaming PC? Which brand to go for? It all comes down to your preferences.

One of the most crucial components of a Gaming PC is its Graphics Card. A Graphics Card determines the game your PC could run, and the performance it would provide. This article provides a proper GPU – Buyer’s Guide for you to look at.

What to Look for when buying a Graphics Card :

 PERFORMANCE

With price comes performance. A good GPU will be able to run recent games at smooth frame rates whereas a great GPU allows you to play those games at a higher resolution as well as perform high-end creative work for you.

COMPATIBILITY

It is frustrating that you buy a Graphics card only to realize that it is an inch longer. Before buying, do your homework and find out about the physical space you case offers. Take a note of the power supply as well, the amps it can supply, the watts it’s rated for, and the types of ports it offers.

PLATFORM

The system you choose to build determines the type of graphics card you should buy. If you have an older dual-core CPU like Pentium then it won’t keep up with the high-end graphics cards. Conversely, if you intend to use three 1080p monitors in surround, a mid-end graphics card might not be the best choice for you.

MEMORY AND BANDWIDTH

Contrary to popular belief, the bigger the GPU’s memory, the better the performance is not always the case. What you need is to pay attention to the bandwidth. Data ready to be processed is usually stored on a card’s dedicated memory called GDDR3 and GDD5. Note that GDDR5 provides twice the bandwidth of GDD3 clocked at the same rate.
